Released in 2007 with an edition size of 1200 samples, the Modern version of Beast is one of the best pieces ever realized by the talented Erick Sosa and one of the most beautiful statues produced by Bowen Design in the vast world of mutants. The same sculpt was also proposed in an Avengers variant (1000 pieces worldwide), with different head and base, made by Randy Bowen, but (in my opinion) with a lower aesthetic impact and appeal, and rather far from the original version. The strong and agile Hank McCoy is a brilliant expert in biochemistry and one of the founding members of the X-Men. Over time, the original, human character of the duo Lee-Kirby was replaced by a character with an animal semblance, half-way between a monkey and a cat, characterized by a completely covered by a thick blue coat body. The overall dynamism and sculpt of this statue are awesome! The Beast is acrobatically placed on a kind of metal pylon (used by Bowen for other mutants too): the left hand serves as the unique foothold and the body is curled up in an extremely dynamic pose, showing off the legs in full push-up, the right arm slightly bent backwards and the unsheathed claws ready to strike. The body exhibits everywhere a blue thick fur, sculpted to perfection, and muscles of great impact, with large shoulders, well defined pectorals and abdominals and evident bulging at the calves, biceps, and (above all) triceps. The electric blue coloring is wonderful and characterized by slight dark shades aimed at highlighting the contours of muscles; it offers a high-impact chromatic contrast with the black of the costume and the sharp nails, here enhanced by the yellow belt and the red of the small buckle centered in life, depicting the classic X logo of the mutants' team. The real strength of the piece, however, is the face, carved and painted really in a superb way: the wide open mouth puts great emphasis on the teeth, with sharp and jutting out canines, while the surly and threatening look is amplified by flat nose and the furrowed eyebrows on the white eyes. The shades of color are much more evident here than on the body and highlight in the best possible way the thick fur pointed backwards on the sides of the head, the broad temples and pointed ears, in an expression of enraged animal-like fury. The base, as above mentioned, represents a sort of metal column, very well carved and rich in detail, resting on a circular platform with the black logo of the X-Men carved on a red background. The market quotations of this beautiful collectible are notably variable, but never very high, and its availability on the international market, after all, reasonable. For this reason and for its incredible aesthetics, this statue represents, in my opinion, a true must-have for all fans of mutant world and, more in general, for any collector.
